Personalized Medicine

Nowhere is the dawn of personalized cancer care more evident than in the treatment of thoracic cancers. In non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, mesothelioma, thymoma and more rare tumors of the thorax we are commonly using information about specific genetic mutations within the cancer itself to guide our treatment. Many of the clinical trials use either genetic markers or imaging characteristics or both to guide the choice of treatment.

Advanced Technologies

A thoracic radiation oncologist uses all of the advanced radiation therapy techniques. A short list of the advanced radiation therapy techniques used includes:

  • 3-D conformal radiation therapy
  • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy
  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy to the Lung
  • Intra-operative Radiation Therapy
  • Brachytherapy

The correct type of radiation therapy or radiation procedure will be chosen for patients based on the type of cancer, stage of cancer, and tumor location(s).

The most exciting advance in Radiation Oncology in treatment of lung cancer is in the area of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy. For those patients with early stage lung cancer who are at a high risk for having problems during lung cancer surgery, either because of prior lung problems or other medical issues, a high dose of radiation therapy delivered three to five times can result in excellent (over 90%) cure rates of these cancers.
